Crystal Bitumen: Characteristics and Properties
Crystal Bitumen is the residual product obtained from the bottom of the vacuum distillation tower during the refining process. It is known for its stiffness and brittleness.
The acceptable penetration range for Crystal Bitumen, as per ASTM D5 standards, falls between 1 to 30. This penetration range is influenced by the quality of the crude oil from which the bitumen is derived.
Unlike some other bitumen types, Crystal Bitumen lacks elasticity. According to the Test Method of ASTM D113, it is considered dry, and its ductility measures below 10 cm.
Crystal Bitumen also possesses a higher flash point compared to Iraqi bitumen and prime bitumen. Its brittleness is evident in the fact that its softening point is approximately three times higher than that of Prime bitumen, indicating that it is not a soft product.
These properties distinguish Crystal Bitumen from other bitumen varieties and make it suitable for specific applications where stiffness and low ductility are desired.
