Description of Anionic Bitumen Emulsion MS-2:
Anionic Bitumen Emulsion MS-2 falls under the category of anionic emulsions, and it is available in various grades with different breaking characteristics. Rapid-setting emulsions are typically used for surface dressing, while medium or slow-setting emulsions are employed in mixtures, where they are combined with aggregates, either through concrete-type mixers or in situ. Rapid-setting emulsions are not suitable for mixtures as they may solidify during mixing and obstruct the mixer. Generally, the choice of emulsion grade for mixtures depends on the size of the aggregate used. Stone mixtures require medium-setting emulsions, whereas sand mixtures require slow-breaking emulsions. Anionic emulsions primarily break through the evaporation of water in the emulsion’s continuous phase. Consequently, the breaking properties of anionic emulsions are influenced by temperature and humidity.
Anionic emulsions carry a negative charge, a common characteristic in many substances. In the Industrial Coatings Industry, extensive research and development, formulation, and laboratory testing have been conducted to create coatings from anionic systems. When an anionic emulsion is mixed with a cationic emulsion, a strong bond forms, resulting in the transformation of the substance into a solid. However, this outcome is not suitable for use as a coating because it cannot be applied to substrates.
Application of Anionic Bitumen Emulsion MS-2
Anionic Slow-Setting Bitumen Emulsion MS-2 is a cold, non-fiberated liquid applied waterproofing bitumen emulsion. The product is manufactured through a process in which bitumen, a special emulsifier, water, and other additives are subjected to a high shear rate colloid mill. The properties of bitumen directly affect the emulsion’s specifications. MS-2 is specifically designed for waterproofing applications in buildings, as well as on concrete and metal surfaces. Its high flash point and low solvent content make MS-2 user-friendly and safe. MS-2 can be applied using various methods, including painting brushes, squeegees, airless spray, and rollers.
Anionic Bitumen Emulsion MS-2 is recommended for pre-mix carpet and patchwork applications. The application rate, as per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) guidelines, is as follows:
Application | Quantity in kg/10sqm area |
Premix carpet | 20 to 23 (kg / 10sqm area) |
Pothole repair | 7% (weight of aggregate) |
