BituPlus Bitumen Emulsion CSS-1 – Ideal for Prime Coating
BituPlus Bitumen Emulsion CSS-1 is a cationic bitumen emulsion that contains a minimum of 57% bitumen. This specially designed water-based Bitumen Emulsion features low viscosity and an extended setting time, making it the perfect product for prime coating on highly porous surfaces. It is dark brown in color and flows freely as a liquid at ambient temperatures.
Prime Coat SS-1K / CSS-1 – A Low Viscosity Solution
Prime coat SS-1K / CSS-1 is a low viscosity emulsion primarily used for prime coating, serving as an alternative to cutback asphalt. This bitumen emulsion is manufactured in compliance with the Malaysian Standard, MS 1.61: 1994 Grade SS-1K.
Key Properties of CSS-1 Bitumen Emulsion
BituPlus asphalt emulsion CSS-1 is manufactured in strict adherence to industry standards, including ASTM D2397-13, AASHTO M208-16, or IS 8887: 2004.

Advantages of CSS-1 Bitumen Emulsion
Here are some notable advantages of this product:
- Environmentally friendly
- No heating required, cost-efficient
- Excellent adhesion to cool and damp surfaces
- High adhesive properties
- Low-temperature curing
- Ability to penetrate cracks and strengthen layers
Applications
CSS-1 is designed for absorptive surfaces, such as low to medium-high porosity materials like wet mix macadam or water-bound macadam. Its purpose is to penetrate, seal capillary voids in the surface, bond and stabilize the existing surface, and enhance adhesion between it and the subsequent construction layer. BS group Bitumen Emulsion CSS-1 is well-suited for prime coat applications on highly porous surfaces like Water Bound Macadam (WBM). It can also be effectively used as a Fog Seal Application.
For pavement bases and surfaces, it can be applied in various ways:
- Plant mix (cold): Utilized with both dense-graded aggregate and sand.
- Mixed-in-place: Suitable for use with dense-graded aggregate, sand, sandy soil, and for slurry seal applications.
In bituminous applications, CSS-1 serves multiple purposes:
- Fog Seal
- Prime coat for penetrable surfaces
- Tack coat
- Dust binder
- Mulch treatment
- Crack filler
Recommended Rate of Application
Asphalt Emulsion CSS-1 ASTM is specifically designed for use in slurry seals and cold-storable mixtures for patching. These emulsions are customized according to the quality of aggregates and local site conditions.
Application | Quantity in Kg/10 m2 Area |
Fog Seal | 5 to 10 |
Slurry Seal | 10 to 12 |
Premix Seal Coat | 12 o 15 |
