Manufacturer of Bitumen Primer D 41

BITUPLUS Bitumen Primer D 41 is an asphaltic primer designed for use in roofing, damp-proofing, and waterproofing applications. It is manufactured as a surface dressing for masonry or concrete to enhance the bond of bituminous materials.

Primer D 41 is a high-quality universal primer made from a special type of bitumen. It is solvent-based and commonly applied to various substrates, including concrete, concrete blocks, bricks, foam concrete, fiber, and steel substrates, to improve the bonding of bituminous products. BITUPLUS Bitumen Primer D 41 complies with ASTM D 41 standards.

Bitumen primer D 41 is similar to cutback asphalt and is used as an undercoating in siding and roofing applications, including shingling and acoustical installations. Unlike previous primer compositions, the addition of halobenzotrifluoride solvent in this primer reduces the volatile content to a maximum of 200 g/l and raises the flash point of the liquid cutback asphalt by at least 5°F. Additionally, this tacky modified primer composition offers compatibility with various substrate surfaces, including metal, felt, fiberboard, plasterboard, and wood substrates. When applied over a plywood roof deck, it lubricates and preserves the wood substrate.

Bitumen Primer Content:

A liquid cutback asphalt containing 30 wt.% of mineral spirits solvent had 10 wt.% of p-bromobenzotrifluoride added to it to create a liquid bitumen primer D 41 with a VOC concentration of 186 g/l and a flash point of 110°F. This bitumen primer D 41 composition was applied in a 6 mil thick layer on a plywood roof deck at ambient temperature. Alternatively, the composition can be sprayed or poured onto the deck. The primer layer was then covered with an asphaltic base sheet, which was nailed to the deck through the primer under ambient temperature conditions. Finally, a granular-surfaced bitumen cap sheet was torch-applied over the secured base sheet.

Bitumen Primer Adhesive:

The above experiment was repeated, but a non-modified bitumen primer D 41, namely, liquid cutback asphalt consisting of 70 wt.% asphalt and 30 wt.% mineral spirits solvent, was used instead of the halobenzotrifluoride solvent described above. The resulting bitumen primer D 41 had a VOC concentration of about 450 g/l and exhibited inferior adhesion to the roof deck.

It is understood that this bitumen primer D 41 composition can be modified by adding conventional excipients like thickeners or diluents to alter its viscosity or pressure-sensitive adhesives to enhance adhesion, without departing from the scope of this invention.

Modified Bitumen Primer:

The modified primer is a tacky, oily substance applied as a layer with a thickness ranging from about 0.75 to about 12 mils, preferably 1-7 mils, on a roof deck. It is then covered with one or more top layers of asphaltic material to create a weather-resistant exposed surface, such as a granule-coated membrane. This installation results in reduced VOC concentration, rapid drying within 1-5 minutes, and a flash temperature above 100°F.

Features of Bitumen Primer D 41:

Uses of Bitumen Primer D 41:

Bitumen Primer D 41 is suitable for use with asphalt in roofing, damp-proofing, and waterproofing applications both below and above ground level. It can be applied to concrete, masonry, metal, and asphalt surfaces. Additionally, it serves as a primer coat to receive membranes or liquid asphalt and asphalt products.

Instructions for Application:

Cleaning:

The primer can be removed from equipment and tools with a suitable solvent such as gasoline or kerosene.

Coverage:

Approximate rate: 0.2 – 0.3 kg/m2. The exact rate depends on the porosity or smoothness of the surface.

Health & Safety:

Personnel should wear protective masks, gloves, and goggles during application.

Precautions:

BITUPLUS Bitumen Primer D 41 contains volatile solvents and has a low flash point. Adequate ventilation in the working area is essential. Keep fires and naked flames at a safe distance.

Storage:

Store in a dry and shaded area in its original packaging. Keep the container covered while working to prevent solvent evaporation.
